The Glance That Protects

kaal gavaa-i-aa kartai aap.
The Creator Himself has eliminated death.
sadaa sadaa man tis no jaap.
Meditate on Him forever and ever, O my mind.
darisat Dhaar raakhay sabh jant.
He watches all with His Glance of Grace and protects them.
gun gaavhu nit nit bhagvant. ||3||
Continually and continuously, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord God. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Creator Itself has sent death away.

O my mind, remember the One, forever and ever.

With a kind look, the One watches over every creature and keeps it safe.

Sing the goodness of the One, again and again, every day.

To be watched over by a kind gaze is to be already safe.
The deeper layer

The Creator takes away the power of death, and the One's kind gaze keeps every creature safe.

Kaal gavaa-i-aa kartai aap: the Creator Itself has done away with death. Death still comes to every body, but its hold and its dread are gone for the one held by the One. Darisat dhaar is the glance of grace: being seen kindly is itself a kind of protection. Gun gaavhu nit nit: sing the One's goodness day after day.

A Question to Sit With

Whose kind attention makes you feel safe?
