Verse 4 of 11

Wide Awake And Emptied Of Ego

ਨੀਦ ਗਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਨਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਸਚ ਮਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੩॥
need ga-ee ha-umai tan thaakee sach mat ridai samaa-ee. ||3||
Sleep is gone, and egotism is exhausted from my body; my heart is permeated with the Teachings of Truth. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My sleep is gone, and ego (haumai — the feeling of being a separate self) has worn itself out in me.

The teaching of Truth has soaked into my heart.

When the ego's weight drains away, Truth soaks all the way in.
The deeper layer

When the sleep of not-noticing lifts and ego wears out, Truth can fill the heart.

Neend here means more than bedtime sleep. It means going through life half-awake, not noticing the One. Haumai is ego, the feeling of being a separate self. Thaakee means it has grown tired and given up. Sach mat ridai samaa-ee — the teaching of Truth soaks into the heart, the way rain soaks into dry ground.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel wide awake and light, instead of heavy and half-asleep?
