Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 64
Verse 7 of 11

Fine Clothes Can't Fill The Gap

pari-a bin seegaar karee taytaa tan taapai kaapar ang na suhaa-ee. ||6||
Without my Beloved, the more I decorate myself, the more my body burns; these clothes do not look good on my body. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without my Beloved, the more I dress myself up, the more my body burns with a restless heat.

These clothes don't look right on me.

No outfit fits right when what your heart wants can't be worn.
The deeper layer

Dressing up on the outside cannot fill a heart that misses the One.

The verse pictures a bride making herself beautiful while her beloved is far away. Every ornament only reminds her who is missing. Tan taapai means the body burns, like a fever of missing someone. In Malaar, the raag of the rains, that heat waits for the cooling rain of the Naam, and no ornament can take its place.

A Question to Sit With

When has looking good on the outside not matched how you felt inside?
