Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 64
Verse 9 of 11

So Near, And I Didn't Know

ਪਿਰੁ ਨਜੀਕਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਪੁੜੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਦਿਖਾਈ ॥੮॥
pir najeek na boojhai bapurhee satgur dee-aa dikhaa-ee. ||8||
Her Husband Lord is nearby, but the wretched bride does not know it. The True Guru reveals Him to her. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Her Husband is close by, but the poor bride does not know it. The True Guru shows Him to her.

The distance you feel is often only in your noticing, not in the One.
The deeper layer

The One you long for is already close; the Guru helps you see it.

Pir najeek means the Beloved is near. Bapurhee means the poor, helpless one, the bride who looks far away for what is right beside her. The distance is in her noticing. Then the True Guru opens her eyes. Grace here is simply seeing what was there all along.

A Question to Sit With

When have you missed something wonderful that was right in front of you?
