Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 64
Verse 10 of 11

The Fire Cooled By The Word

sahj mili-aa tab hee sukh paa-i-aa tarisnaa sabad bujhaa-ee. ||9||
When she meets Him with intuitive ease, she finds peace; the Word of the Shabad quenches the fire of desire. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When she meets Him gently and naturally, with no forcing, she finds peace.

The Word puts out the fire of wanting.

All the longing was reaching, in the end, for a great quiet calm.
The deeper layer

Peace comes when the meeting happens in its own easy way, and the Word cools the fire of wanting.

Sahaj means natural ease, the way sleep comes when you stop trying so hard. Trisnaa is the thirst of always wanting more. Sabad bujhaa-ee — the Word puts that fire out, like rain on a burning field. This is Malaar's own picture: rain falling on fire. All the longing settles into stillness.

A Question to Sit With

What does real peace feel like in your body after you've been wanting something badly?
