What Lasts Beyond The Moment

ਸੇ ਦੁਖ ਆਗੈ ਜਿ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸੇ ॥
say dukh aagai je bhog bilaasay.
One who is obsessed with enjoying pleasures here, shall suffer in pain hereafter.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥੮॥੨॥੫॥
naanak mukat nahee bin naavai saachay. ||8||2||5||
O Nanak, there is no liberation without the True Name. ||8||2||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever lives for pleasures here meets pain later on.

Nanak says: there is no freedom without the True Name.

Quick pleasures leave you hungry; the True Name fills and stays.
The deeper layer

Quick pleasures leave us hungry. The True Name fills us and stays.

Say dukh aagai je bhog bilaasay: those who live only for bhog bilaas, enjoyment and pleasure, will meet pain later. It is like eating only candy for dinner. It is sweet for a minute, and then you feel worse.

Naanak mukat nahee bin naavai saachay: Nanak says there is no mukat, freedom, without the True Name.

The warning is about the emptiness that quick pleasures leave behind. The Name is what fills it. So a shabad full of warnings ends on a hopeful note.

A Question to Sit With

What's something that feels good in the moment but leaves you wanting more?
