Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 69
Verse 5 of 9

Pulled Two Ways By Wanting

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
bin gur daatay kinai na paa-i-aa.
Without the Guru, the Giver, no one finds the Lord.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੋਭਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥
manmukh lobh doojai lobhaa-i-aa.
The greedy self-willed manmukh is attracted and engrossed in duality.
ਐਸੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
aisay gi-aanee boojhhu ko-ay.
Only a few spiritual teachers realize this,
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
bin gur bhaytay mukat na ho-ay. ||4||
that without meeting the Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||4||

In plain words

Without the Guru, the Giver, no one finds the One.

The greedy person who follows only their own wants is pulled in two directions and gets lost in it.

Only a few wise people understand this:

without meeting the Guru, no one is set free.

Wanting more pulls you two ways at once; wisdom gathers you back into one.
The deeper layer

We find the One through the Guru, the Giver, not by grabbing for more.

Bin gur daatay kinai na paa-i-aa: without the Guru, the Giver, no one has found the One. Daataa means giver. Then the verse shows what happens instead. The manmukh, the person led by self-will, is pulled by lobh, greed, into doojai, "the second." That means a split mind, "me against everyone else."

Think of a kid in a toy shop who wants everything at once. They get pulled in every direction and end up tired and unhappy. The Guru's wisdom gathers us back into one. Few people see this clearly, but freedom comes by meeting the Guru.

A Question to Sit With

When has wanting too much left you feeling pulled apart?
