Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 69
Verse 7 of 9

Worship That Softens The Heart

ਹਉਮੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
ha-umai bhagat karay sabh ko-ay.
In egotism, everyone can pretend to worship God with devotion.
ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
naa man bheejai naa sukh ho-ay.
But this does not soften the mind, and it does not bring peace.
ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਆਪੁ ਜਾਣਾਏ ॥
kahi kahi kahan aap jaanaa-ay.
By speaking and preaching, the mortal only shows off his self-conceit.
ਬਿਰਥੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੬॥
birthee bhagat sabh janam gavaa-ay. ||6||
His devotional worship is useless, and his life is a total waste. ||6||

In plain words

Full of ego, anyone can put on a show of loving the One.

But that does not soak the mind through, and it brings no peace.

Talking and preaching only show off how proud a person is.

Devotion like that is wasted, and such a life slips by for nothing.

You can tell heartfelt devotion by whether it softens you and brings peace.
The deeper layer

Worship done to show off leaves the heart dry; devotion that softens you brings peace.

Ha-umai bhagat karay sabh ko-ay: anyone can act devoted while haumai, the ego, is in charge. But then naa man bheejai, the mind is not soaked through. Think of a sponge that stays dry because the water only runs over its top. No peace comes.

Talking and preaching only to be admired just makes the self bigger. The verse says worship like that is wasted, and a life spent that way slips by. So the test is simple. Heartfelt devotion makes us gentler, and it brings peace. That is the kind worth giving our days to.

A Question to Sit With

How can you tell when someone means something, versus just performing it?
