In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

My Beloved is the Giver of loving devotion.

The One's own people are filled with the One's love.

And the One is filled with love for them, day and night, and never forgets them, not even for a blink.

The Lord of the World, the treasure of all good things, is always with me. Every good quality belongs to the Lord of the Universe.

The One's feet have won my heart. As the One's servant, I am filled to overflowing with the sweetness of the Naam.

Nanak says: my Beloved is kind forever. Out of millions, hardly anyone comes to know the One.

The love you give the One was first a gift the One gave you.
The deeper layer

The love you feel for the One is itself a gift from the One.

This chhant, a song of praise, comes from Guru Arjan, the Fifth Guru. Preetam prem bhagat kay daatay: the Beloved is the Giver of loving devotion. The love we offer back was given to us first. Gun nidh, the treasure of every good quality, is sadaa sangay, always with us. The One holds the One's people in mind day and night.

Out of millions, hardly anyone comes to know this Beloved. Think of a kind friend sitting right beside you in a noisy room. Few notice. Those who do find they were loved all along.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt loved before you did anything to earn it?
