Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One set up the wrestling match and made the arena.
The wrestlers came in with a great noise and show; those who follow the Guru are full of joy.
Those who follow only their own minds, foolish and unripe, are thrown down and beaten. The One wrestles, the One throws them down; the One set up this whole play.
There is one Master of all; those who follow the Guru know it. In the flow of the One, what each of us carries is written on our forehead, with no pen and no ink.
In the Sangat we meet the One, and there the One's goodness is sung forever.
Nanak says: praising the True Word, we come to know what is True.
Life is like a great wrestling match, and the One set up the whole arena.
Chhinjh is a village wrestling tournament, full of drums and crowds. The gurmukh, the one who follows the Guru, enters it with joy. The manmukh, the one who follows only their own mind, is called kachi-aa, unripe, like fruit not yet ready, and gets thrown. The One is wrestler, arena and play all at once.
Hukmee likhai sir laykh: in the hukam, the flow of existence, each life carries its own pattern, written without pen or ink. Satsangat maylaap: we meet the One in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.
Think of a school sports day. The track, the races and the cheering all come from one plan.
Can a hard match still be something you are glad to be in?
