Will My Love Last Through The Storm

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੩ ॥

Shalok, Third Mehl:

Hanging low, low and thick in the sky, the clouds are changing color.

How do I know whether my love for my Husband Lord shall endure?

The love of those soul-brides endures, if their minds are filled with the Love and the Fear of God.

O Nanak, she who has no Love and Fear of God - her body shall never find peace. ||1||

In plain words

The clouds hang lower and lower, changing their colors across the sky.

How can I know if my love for my Beloved will last?

The love of those brides lasts whose hearts hold both awe and love for the One.

Nanak says: the one who has no awe and no love finds no peace in her body.

Love lasts where wonder and warmth live side by side.
The deeper layer

Love for the One lasts in a heart that holds both awe and love.

Bhau bhaa-o is often translated "fear and love." Here bhau means awe, the wonder you feel before something vast, and never terror. Guru Amar Das, the third Guru, watches the clouds change color and asks the question every loving heart asks: will my love last? The answer is awe and love living together.

Without them, the body finds no sukh, no peace. Think of standing at the edge of the ocean. You feel small, and you feel at home, both at once.

A Question to Sit With

What helps a feeling grow into something that lasts?
