In plain words

When the earth is in distress, it prays to the One with all its heart.

The True One listens closely and gives comfort, gently and naturally.

The One tells Indra, the rain god of the old stories, and the rain pours down in streams.

Grain and plenty grow in great amounts; no one can say what they are worth.

Nanak says: praise the Naam. The One reaches out and gives food to every living being.

Eating this, peace grows, and pain does not come again.

Call out honestly, and the One leans in to listen.
The deeper layer

When the earth calls out in need, the One listens and sends what nourishes.

Kalmal ho-ee maydnee: the earth is in distress, dry and waiting. It prays with liv, its whole attention. Sachai suni-aa kann day: the True One gives ear and listens, and comforts sahj subhaa-ay, with natural ease. Indra is the rain god of Hindu stories; here even he moves by the One's word.

The rain brings grain, and the Naam is the deeper food. Sabhnaa jee-aa daydaa rijak: the One feeds every living being. Think of a farmer watching the first rain darken a dry field after a long wait.

A Question to Sit With

Who leans in and listens when you are hurting?
