Everything Rests In One Hand

salok mehlaa 3.
Shalok, Third Mehl:
naanak so salaahee-ai jis vas sabh kichh ho-ay.
O Nanak, praise the Lord; everything is in His power.
Serve Him, O mortal beings; there is none other than Him.
gurmukh har parabh man vasai taaN sadaa sadaa sukh ho-ay.
The Lord God abides within the mind of the Gurmukh, and then he is at peace, forever and ever.
He is never cynical; all anxiety has been taken out from within him.
Whatever happens, happens naturally; no one has any say about it.
sachaa saahib man vasai taaN man chindi-aa fal paa-ay.
When the True Lord abides in the mind, then the mind's desires are fulfilled.
naanak tin kaa aakhi-aa aap sunay je la-i-an pannai paa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, He Himself hears the words of those, whose accounts are in His Hands. ||1||

In plain words

Nanak says: praise the One who holds everything in its power.

Serve that One, O people; there is no one else but the One.

When the One lives in the heart of the one who follows the Guru, there is peace forever and ever.

Doubt does not come at all, and every worry leaves from within.

Whatever happens, happens in its own natural way; no one has any say in it.

When the True Master lives in the heart, the heart's wishes come true.

Nanak says: the One listens to the words of those the One has taken into its own care.

If everything rests in one caring hand, worry has somewhere to set itself down.
The deeper layer

Everything rests in the One's hands, and a heart that knows this can set its worries down.

Jis vas sabh kichh ho-ay: everything is in the One's power. Guru Amar Das offers this as relief. Sahsaa, doubt, and chintaa, worry, leave when we trust that all is held. Jo kichh ho-ay so sahjay ho-ay: whatever happens, happens in the natural flow.

Ji la-i-an pannai paa-ay: those the One has taken into its own care. The One listens to them. Think of a small child asleep in the back seat on a long drive, trusting the one at the wheel.

A Question to Sit With

What worry could you set down if you trusted it was held?
