The rainbird prays: O Lord, grant Your Grace, and bless me with the gift of the life of the soul.

You are the Giver of peace, O Infinite Lord God; You are the Giver of the treasure of virtue.

O Nanak, the Gurmukh is forgiven; in the end, the Lord God shall be your only friend. ||2||

In plain words

The rainbird prays: "Be kind, and give me the gift of life.

Without water my thirst does not go away, and my breath slips away.

You are the endless Giver of peace, the Giver of good qualities, a treasure."

Nanak says: the One forgives the one who follows the Guru, and at the end the One is that person's friend.

The most honest prayer is simply: help me live.
The deeper layer

The rainbird asks for life, and the One who gives peace becomes the friend who stays at the end.

A salok of the Third Mehl. Jee-a daan: the gift of life for the soul. The bird's prayer is honest, empty-handed asking. Forgiveness for the one who follows the Guru is a gift received, never earned. Ant baylee, the friend at the end: when everything else falls away at death, this friendship remains.

A Question to Sit With

Who is the friend who would still be there when everything else is gone?
