The Three Colors And The One Love

pa-orhee.
Pauree:
aapay jagat upaa-ay kai gun a-ugan karay beechaar.
He created the world; He considers the merits and demerits of the mortals.
tarai gun sarab janjaal hai naam na Dharay pi-aar.
Those who are entangled in the three gunas - the three dispositions - do not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
gun chhod a-ugan kamaavday dargeh hohi khu-aar.
Forsaking virtue, they practice evil; they shall be miserable in the Court of the Lord.
joo-ai janam tinee haari-aa kit aa-ay sansaar.
They lose their life in the gamble; why did they even come into the world?
sachai sabad man maari-aa ahinis naam pi-aar.
But those who conquer and subdue their minds, through the True Word of the Shabad - night and day, they love the Naam.
jinee purkhee ur Dhaari-aa sachaa alakh apaar.
Those people enshrine the True, Invisible and Infinite Lord in their hearts.
too gundaataa niDhaan heh asee avgani-aar.
You, O Lord, are the Giver, the Treasure of virtue; I am unvirtuous and unworthy.
jis bakhsay so paa-isee gur sabdee veechaar. ||13||
He alone finds You, whom You bless and forgive, and inspire to contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||13||

In plain words

The One made the world and weighs the good and the bad in it.

Caught in the world's three moods — calm, restless and heavy — people give no love to the Naam.

They leave the good and do the wrong, and they end up sad and ashamed in the One's Court.

They lose their life like a bet in a game. Why did they even come into the world?

Those who quiet their mind through the True Word love the Naam, day and night.

They keep the True One, unseen and endless, in their hearts.

You are the Giver of good qualities, a treasure; I have none of my own.

Whoever You forgive finds You, thinking on the Guru's Word.

Empty hands, honestly held out, are the ones that get filled.
The deeper layer

Caught in the world's three moods, people gamble their life away; the One's forgiveness and the Guru's Word bring them home.

This is the thirteenth pauri. Trai gun: the three strands of the world (sattva, rajas, tamas — calm, restless, heavy) that keep the mind tangled. The lost bet warns against staking a life on what passes. Asee avgani-aar, I have no virtues: honest empty hands, never self-contempt, and this humility opens the door.

A Question to Sit With

Which of the three pulls, restlessness, heaviness, or calm, is strongest in you today?
