Nights That Finally Pass In Peace

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਵਿਹਾਵੀ ਸਾਕਤਾਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥
raat na vihaavee saaktaaN jinHaa visrai naa-o.
The faithless cynics forget the Name of the Lord; the night of their lives does not pass in peace.
ਰਾਤੀ ਦਿਨਸ ਸੁਹੇਲੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਉ ॥੧॥
raatee dinas suhaylee-aa naanak har gun gaaN-o. ||1||
Their days and nights become comfortable, O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

For those cut off from the One, who forget the Naam, the night will not pass.

Nanak says: days and nights become easy and sweet when I sing the praises of the One.

Remembering the One is what finally lets you rest.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the Naam makes the night long; singing the One's praises makes days and nights easy.

A salok of the Fifth Mehl, Guru Arjan. Saakat: someone who has cut themselves off from the Source; here it simply means someone who forgets. Har gun gaa-o, sing the One's qualities, and the sleepless night becomes suhaylee, comfortable. Rest grows from remembering.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind settle on a night when it will not stop spinning?
