ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਵਣਿ ਜੇ ਵਸੈ ਚਹੁ ਵੇਛੋੜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
naanak saavan jay vasai chahu vaychhorhaa ho-ay.
O Nanak, when it rains in the month of Saawan, four suffer the pains of separation:

gaa-ee putaa nirDhanaa panthee chaakar ho-ay. ||2||
the cow's calves, the poor, the travelers and the servants. ||2||

In plain words

Nanak says: when it rains in Saawan, the monsoon month, four feel the pain of being apart:

the calf kept from its mother, the poor, the traveler far from home, and the servant bound to work.

Longing is the road that leads you home.
The deeper layer

When the rains come, some hearts feel their longing more sharply.

Naanak saavan jay vasai chahu vaychhorhaa ho-ay: when it rains in Saawan, the monsoon month, four feel the pain of vaychhorhaa, being apart. Gaa-ee putaa: calves kept from their mothers. NirDhanaa: the poor. Panthee: travelers far from home. Chaakar: servants bound to their work.

This salok is the mirror of the one before it. The same rain that makes some people glad makes others miss what they love. It is like a holiday. For someone far from family, the happy day can feel lonely.

In Raag Malaar this ache is never a dead end. Viraha, the pain of being apart, is the very pull that leads us home.

A Question to Sit With

When has missing something shown you how much it mattered?
