Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You are True, O True One, and You spread Truth everywhere. Like a closed lotus, You sit in deep, still calm, hidden from view.
Brahma, the creator in the old stories, is called great, yet even he cannot find where You end. You have no father and no mother; who gave birth to You?
You have no form and no outline; You are beyond every class of people. You feel no hunger and no thirst; You are always full.
You have poured Yourself into the Guru, and You move through the Guru's word. Whoever pleases the True One melts into Truth.
The One has no parents, no shape and no rank, and still makes itself known through the Guru.
Brahmai vadaa kahaa-ay ant na paa-i-aa: Brahma, called great, cannot find the One's limit. Brahma is honored in Hindu tradition as the creator. Even the greatest name people know points past itself to the One.
Naa tis roop na raykh varan sabaa-i-aa: no form, no feature, beyond all varan, the social classes people sort each other into. The One belongs to no class, so every person stands equal before it.
Gur meh aap samo-ay sabad vartaa-i-aa: the One pours itself into the Guru and moves through the sabad, the Word. Think of the wind. You cannot see it, but you see the trees move.
Can you love something you cannot picture or measure?
