Nanak says: modesty and doing what is right, these two belong to the one who holds the true wealth.
Do not call that money your friend if it gets your head knocked about.
People who hold only that kind of wealth are called poor.
But those whose hearts You live in, O One, are oceans of goodness.
The riches that stay yours are the ones no one can take.
Saram Dharam du-ay naankaa jay Dhan palai paa-ay: saram, modesty and self-respect, and Dharam, right living, belong to those who hold the true Dhan, wealth. The salok plays with the word "wealth."
Do not call that wealth your friend if it gets your head beaten. Money can bring fights and trouble.
Jin kai palai Dhan vasai tin kaa naa-o fakeer: those who hold only worldly wealth are called fakeer, beggars. It is a surprise twist. Someone with a huge bank account can still be poor inside.
The last line turns to the One: those in whose hearts You live are gunee gaheer, oceans of goodness. That is wealth no one can steal. Nobody can pick kindness out of your pocket.
What do you own that no one could ever take away from you?
