The Hunger Nothing But The Name Can Fill

ਮਃ ੧ ॥
mehlaa 1.
First Mehl:
ਦੁਖੀ ਦੁਨੀ ਸਹੇੜੀਐ ਜਾਇ ਤ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥
dukhee dunee sahayrhee-ai jaa-ay ta lageh dukh.
Worldly possessions are obtained by pain and suffering; when they are gone, they leave pain and suffering.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਲਥੀ ਭੁਖ ॥
naanak sachay naam bin kisai na lathee bhukh.
O Nanak, without the True Name, hunger is never satisfied.
ਰੂਪੀ ਭੁਖ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜਾਂ ਦੇਖਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਭੁਖ ॥
roopee bhukh na utrai jaaN daykhaaN taaN bhukh.
Beauty does not satisfy hunger; when the man sees beauty, he hungers even more.
ਜੇਤੇ ਰਸ ਸਰੀਰ ਕੇ ਤੇਤੇ ਲਗਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥੨॥
jaytay ras sareer kay taytay lageh dukh. ||2||
As many as are the pleasures of the body, so many are the pains which afflict it. ||2||

In plain words

The things of the world bring trouble when you gather them, and when they go, they leave trouble behind.

Nanak says: without the True Name, no one's hunger has ever gone away.

Looking at beauty does not end the hunger. The more I look, the hungrier I get.

As many pleasures as the body has, that many aches come along with them.

Wanting more is a hunger that having more only grows.
The deeper layer

Wanting more is a hunger that getting more only makes bigger.

Dukhee dunee sahayrhee-ai: worldly things are gathered with trouble, and when they go, they leave trouble behind. It is like a treadmill. You keep running and stay in the same place. That endless running is tarisnaa, craving.

Roopee bhukh na utrai: looking at beautiful things does not end the hunger; it feeds it. Think of scrolling through pictures of new shoes. The more you look, the more you want.

Jaytay ras sareer kay taytay lageh dukh: every pleasure of the body comes with its own ache.

Naanak sachay naam bin kisai na lathee bhukh: without the True Name, no one's hunger has ever gone away. Only the Naam quiets the appetite that more can never fill.

A Question to Sit With

When have you gotten something you wanted a lot, and found you still wanted more?
