In plain words

Read and learn the praise of the Naam. Other kinds of cleverness are false.

Without dealing in Truth, a life is wasted.

No one has ever found the One's end or far shore.

The whole world is wrapped in the darkness of pride. It does not like the Truth.

Those who leave this world forgetting the Naam are roasted, as if in a frying pan.

They pour the oil of being pulled two ways inside themselves, and they burn.

They come into the world and wander without aim, and when the play is over they leave.

Nanak says: soaked in Truth, people melt into the True One.

The best thing you can trade your days for is keeping the One in mind.
The deeper layer

The praise of the Naam is the study most worth your time. A life that trades in Truth melts into Truth.

Parhee-ai naam saalaah hor buDhee mithi-aa: read the praise of the Naam; other cleverness is false. Bin sachay vaapaar janam birthi-aa: without dealing in Truth, life goes to waste. The whole world sits in garab gubaar, the fog of pride.

Forgetting the Naam is pictured as being roasted in a frying pan. The oil in that pan is dubiDhaa, being pulled two ways, and it burns from the inside. Naanak sachai mayl sachai rati-aa: whoever is soaked in Truth joins the True One.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you spend a lot of time on that might just be noise?
