Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. Its Name is Truth. It is the Creator of all. It is fearless and full of love, beyond time, never born, shining on its own. And the One is found by the Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Your Naam carries us across, like a boat over deep water. Your Naam brings respect and worship.
Your Naam is the jewel that makes us beautiful. It is what the awake mind is looking for.
Your Naam brings honor to everyone's name.
Without Your Naam, no one is ever given respect.
The Naam carries you across life, and the Naam gives you honor.
A new raag begins here, so the shabad opens with the Mool Mantar. That is the opening verse of the Guru Granth Sahib. It tells who the One is. One Creator. Truth is the Name. The Maker. Without fear, without hate. Timeless, never born, existing by itself. Known by the Guru's grace.
Then comes the heading for Raag Parbhaatee Bibhaas. Parbhaatee is the dawn raag, music for early morning. These are Guru Nanak's Chaupade, songs of four verses each.
Naa-ay tayrai tarnaa: through Your Naam, we are carried across. Life is pictured as deep water, and the Naam is the boat. The Naam is also pat, honor, and gahnaa, jewelry that makes us beautiful. It is the maksood, the goal, of the mat, the awake mind.
Here the Naam means more than a word. It is the whole living presence of the One, held in your heart. Think of a friend's name on your phone. The name matters because of the friend behind it.
What is something that makes you feel proud in a good, quiet way?
