Always a Way Back

ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
bikh khaanaa bikh bolnaa bikh kee kaar kamaa-ay.
They eat poison, speak poison and do poisonous deeds.
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥
jam dar baaDhay maaree-ah chhootas saachai naa-ay. ||2||
Bound and gagged at Death's door, they are punished; they can be saved only through the True Name. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some people eat poison, speak poison, and do poisonous deeds.

At death's door they are tied up and made to pay. Only the True Name sets them free.

No matter how tangled things get, the True Name is always a way back.
The deeper layer

A life that feeds on what harms it ends up trapped, and the True Name is what sets it free.

Bikh khaanaa bikh bolnaa, bikh kee kaar kamaa-ay: eating poison, speaking poison, doing poison-deeds, a picture of a life feeding on what harms it. Jam dar baadhay maaree-ah: at death's door such a life is bound and made to pay for what it did. Then the release: chhootas saachai naa-ay, freedom comes through the True Name.

A Question to Sit With

Do you believe there is always a way to start over? Why?
