The Only Medicine

ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
ih sansaar sagal bikaar.
This whole world is corrupt.
tayraa naam daaroo avar naasat karanhaar apaar. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Your Name is the only cure; nothing else works, O Infinite Creator Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This whole world is sick with wrong ways.

Your Naam is the only medicine. Nothing else works, O Creator without end.

For the restlessness that no possession can cure, the Naam is the medicine.
The deeper layer

The whole world catches a restless sickness, and the Naam is the one medicine that cures it.

This is the rahau, the pause line that holds the heart of the whole shabad. Ih sansaar sagal bikaar: this whole world is full of bikaar, a disorder of the mind, the restless ache of craving that keeps people chasing. Against it, tayraa naam daaroo, Your Naam is the cure. Avar naasat means nothing else works as a remedy, and karanhaar apaar calls to the infinite Doer, the Maker without limit. The one lasting medicine for restlessness is remembrance.

A Question to Sit With

What do you reach for when you feel restless, and does it leave you satisfied?
