The Guru Keeps Giving

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੋ ਇਛੈ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satgur mayraa sadaa hai daataa jo ichhai so fal paa-ay.
My True Guru is forever the Giver. I receive whatever fruits and rewards I desire.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੀ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee gur sabdee sach paa-ay. ||4||3||
O Nanak, through the Naam, glorious greatness is obtained; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the True One is found. ||4||3||

In plain words

My True Guru is forever the Giver. Whatever fruit I wish for, I receive.

Nanak says: through the Naam comes glorious greatness, and through the Guru's Word the True One is found.

The Guru keeps giving; the best of it is the True One.
The deeper layer

The Guru never stops giving, and through the Guru's Word the True One is found.

Satgur mayraa sadaa hai daataa means "my True Guru is forever the Giver." That theme keeps coming back in this raag.

What is the gift? Not money or prizes. Naam is the Name, remembering the One. Sach is the true, the thing that lasts. Gur sabdee sach paa-ay means "through the Guru's Word, the True One is found."

Think of a grandparent who gives you birthday presents. They are nice. But the thing you keep forever is the stories and the love. Through the Name and the Word, what is true becomes clear.

A Question to Sit With

What do you need that no amount of stuff could give you?
