Nothing Can Reach You Here

ਜੋ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਕਰਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
jo tayree sarnaa-ee har jee-o tin kee karahi partipaal.
O Dear Lord, You cherish and sustain those who seek Your Sanctuary.
aap kirpaa kar raakho har jee-o pohi na sakai jamkaal. ||2||
O Dear Lord, the Messenger of Death cannot even touch those whom You, in Your Mercy, protect. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Dear One, You cherish and feed those who come to Your shelter.

Dear One, those You protect in Your kindness are so safe that death cannot even touch them.

In the One's shelter, even fear cannot reach you.
The deeper layer

The One looks after everyone who comes for shelter, and death cannot touch them.

Tin kee karahi partipaal means You care for them. Partipaal means to cherish and feed, the way a parent feeds a small child.

The verse names jamkaal, the messenger of death from old stories. It says pohi na sakai jamkaal: that messenger cannot even touch the ones the One protects.

In plain words, in the One's shelter, even your biggest fear cannot reach you. Think of being wrapped in a warm blanket during a thunderstorm. The storm is still outside, but inside, you feel held.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel safe when you're afraid?
