Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Facing the Guru, keep the dear One in mind always, for as long as there is breath in you.
Through the Guru's Word, the mind becomes clean, and the puffed-up pride leaves it.
That person's life bears fruit, who is soaked in the Naam of the One.
For as long as you have breath, keep the One in mind. A life soaked in the Naam bears fruit.
gurmukh har jee-o sadaa Dhi-aavahu — as a gurmukh, someone facing the Guru, always keep the dear Lord in mind. jab lag jee-a paraan — for as long as there is breath in you.
gur sabdee man nirmal ho-aa — through the Guru's Word, the mind becomes clean. chookaa man abhimaan — abhimaan, the puffed-up "I'm better" feeling, goes away.
safal janam tis paraanee kayraa — that person's life is safal, fruitful. Think of a tree loaded with ripe fruit. This opening verse is three lines long instead of two, and it sets up the whole shabad: remember the One as long as you breathe.
If today were measured by how present you were to the One, how would it go?
