The Name of the Lord is the Giver of peace forever. With intuitive ease, drink in the Sublime Essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, listen to the Guru's teaching.

The Naam of the One always gives peace. Easily and gently, drink in the sweet taste of the One.

Deep listening and easy sipping: that's how the Naam is received.
The deeper layer

Listen to the Guru, and drink in the Naam easily; it always gives peace.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. mayray man gur kee sikh suneejai: O my mind, listen to the Guru's teaching. Suneejai means listen deeply, the way you listen to a friend telling you a secret.

har kaa naam sadaa sukh-daata: the Naam always gives peace. sehjay har ras peejai: drink in its sweetness sehjay, easily and naturally.

Think of sipping cold water on a hot day. You don't gulp it all at once. You let it cool you slowly. The Naam is received like that, a sip at a time.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between hearing something and listening closely to it?
