The Gift Waiting to Be Opened

ਮਾਨਸ ਜਨਮਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥

Those human beings who do not serve the True Guru - their lives are uselessly wasted.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
nadar karay taaN satgur maylay sehjay sahj samaa-i-aa.
When God bestows His Glance of Grace, then we meet the True Guru, merging in intuitive peace and poise.

O Nanak, by great good fortune, the Naam is bestowed; by perfect destiny, meditate. ||4||5||

In plain words

Those who are given a human life and never serve the True Guru let that life go to waste.

When the One looks with grace, the One brings us to the True Guru, and we melt into a deep, easy calm.

Nanak says: by great good fortune the Naam is given, and that is the true honor. By perfect fortune, we keep it in mind.

An unopened life is a gift waiting; grace is what opens it.
The deeper layer

A human life is a gift, and grace brings you to the Guru who helps you use it.

maanas janam satguroo na sayvi-aa: someone who never serves the True Guru. birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa: their life goes to waste. Picture a present left wrapped in the corner, never opened.

Then comes nadar karay: when the One gives nadar, a glance of grace, the Guru is right there. sehjay sahj samaa-i-aa: a person slips into sahj, a deep and natural calm.

naanak naam milai vadi-aa-ee: Nanak says the Naam is the greatest honor. poorai bhaag Dhi-aa-i-aa: it is great good fortune to keep it in mind. Guru Amar Das, signing as Nanak, closes the shabad here.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a gift or a good thing in your life you've been leaving unopened?
