The Hidden Jewel

guptaa naam vartai vich kaljug ghat ghat har bharpoor rahi-aa.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is hidden, but it is pervasive in the Dark Age. The Lord is totally pervading and permeating each and every heart.
naam ratan tinaa hirdai pargati-aa jo gur sarnaa-ee bhaj pa-i-aa. ||2||
The Jewel of the Naam is revealed within the hearts of those who hurry to the Sanctuary of the Guru. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Naam is hidden, yet in these dark times it is at work everywhere. The One fills each and every heart.

The jewel of the Naam shines out in the hearts of those who run to the Guru's shelter.

The jewel is already inside you; the Guru is how you notice it.
The deeper layer

The Naam is a jewel hidden in your heart, and it shines when you run to the Guru.

Guptaa naam: the Naam is hidden. It is present everywhere, but unseen. The verse calls it naam ratan, the jewel of the Naam, tucked away in the heart.

It appears when we hurry to the Guru's shelter: gur sarnaa-ee bhaj pa-i-aa. So this is a finding. Think of money you left in your coat pocket last winter. You pull it out and smile. It was yours all along.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable you already have that you sometimes forget is there?
