Food for the Soul

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਇ ॥
amrit naam bhojan har day-ay.
The Lord bestows the Ambrosial Food of the Naam.
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਲੇਇ ॥
kot maDhay ko-ee virlaa lay-ay.
Out of millions, only a rare few receive it
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੧॥
jis no apnee nadar karay-i. ||1||
- only those who are blessed by God's Glance of Grace. ||1||

In plain words

The One gives the sweet nectar-food of the Naam.

Out of millions, only a rare few take it:

those on whom the One casts a glance of grace.

The Naam is food for the soul, received through grace.
The deeper layer

The Naam is food for your inner self, and grace places it in your hands.

Amrit naam bhojan har day-ay means "the Lord gives the nectar-food of the Naam." Bhojan means a meal. Your body needs lunch every day. Your inner self needs feeding too, and remembering the One is that meal.

The verse says kot maDhay ko-ee virlaa lay-ay: "out of millions, only a rare one takes it." Who? Jis no apnee nadar karay-i: "the one the Lord looks on with grace." Nadar means a kind, loving glance.

So this food is received as a gift. Think of a friend handing you half their sandwich. You didn't earn it. You just held out your hands. Being rare here means being open to the gift.

A Question to Sit With

What feeds you on the inside, the way food feeds your body?
