Verse 3 of 5

Where the Darkness Lifts

ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਵਸਾਇ ॥
gur kay charan man maahi vasaa-ay.
Whoever enshrines the Guru's Feet within his mind,
ਦੁਖੁ ਅਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੇਰਾ ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
dukh anHayraa andrahu jaa-ay.
is rid of pain and darkness from within.
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
aapay saachaa la-ay milaa-ay. ||2||
The True Lord unites him with Himself. ||2||

In plain words

Whoever keeps the Guru's feet in their mind, holding the Guru's teaching close,

loses the pain and the darkness inside.

The True One joins that person to the One.

Keep the teaching at your center, and the inner darkness lifts.
The deeper layer

Keep the Guru's teaching in your mind, and the darkness inside lifts.

Gur kay charan man maahi vasaa-ay means "settle the Guru's feet in your mind." Charan means feet. In Gurbani, the holy writing, the Guru's feet stand for the teaching, held close and humbly. So it means keeping the teaching at the center of your thoughts.

Then dukh goes away, which means pain, along with the darkness inside. Think of a dark room at night. You don't have to push the darkness out. You flip on one light, and it is simply gone.

And then aapay saachaa la-ay milaa-ay: "the True One unites you with Himself." The One does the joining. We only keep the light on.

A Question to Sit With

What thought, kept close, helps the darkness lift when you're low?
