The Lofty and Exalted Lord became pleasing to my heart and my inner being, when the Guru breathed the Mantra of the Lord into my ears. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One, the Life of the World, is my breath of life.
The highest One became dear to my heart, deep inside, when the Guru spoke the mantra of the One into my ears.
The One is closer to you than your own breath.
The One who gives life to the whole world is your very breath, nearer than near.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. The One is jagjeevan, the life of the world, and paraan, the breath itself. The Guru breathing the mantra into the ears (gur mant dee-o har kaan) is a tender image of a teaching received so closely it becomes part of you.
A Question to Sit With
What is something so close to you that you almost never notice it?
