I sing the Praises of the Lord, Merciful to the meek, Destroyer of pain. Following the Guru's Teachings, I gather in the Wealth of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O mind, repeat the Naam of the One who is in everything.

I sing of the One who is kind to the humble and breaks pain apart. Following the Guru's teaching, I gather the wealth of the Naam.

The Naam is the wealth that lasts.
The deeper layer

Keep the Naam turning inside you; it is the one treasure that lasts.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It speaks to the mind: jap man raam naam, O mind, repeat the Naam.

The One is called deen da-i-aal, kind to the small and the struggling. The One is also dukh bhanjan, the One who breaks pain apart.

By following gurmat, the Guru's teaching, we gather naam padaarath, the wealth of the Naam. Think about the things you own. A phone breaks. A game gets old. Money gets spent. This treasure is different. It cannot be lost, and you never have to leave it behind.

A Question to Sit With

What is something valuable in your life that no one could ever take away?
