Closer Than You Think

kaa-i-aa nagar nagar har basi-o mat gurmat har har sahay.
The Lord abides in the body-village; through the Wisdom of the Guru's Teachings, the Lord, Har, Har, is revealed.
sareer sarovar naam har pargati-o ghar mandar har parabh lahay. ||2||
In the lake of the body, the Lord's Name has been revealed. Within my own home and mansion, I have obtained the Lord God. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One lives in the town of the body. Through the Guru's teaching, the One, Har, Har, is shown.

In the lake of the body, the Naam of the One has appeared. In my own home, my own temple, I have found the Lord, the One.

The One you seek dwells inside you, right at home.
The deeper layer

The One you are looking for lives right inside you.

The verse gives two pictures. First, kaa-i-aa nagar: your body is like a little town, and the One lives there. Second, sareer sarovar: your body is like a still, holy lake, and the Naam shines up out of it.

So the search moves close, to your own ghar mandar, your own home and heart. It is like hunting all over the house for your glasses while they sit on your head.

People in every tradition travel far to find the holy. This verse gently says: look close first.

A Question to Sit With

If the thing you were searching for was inside you all along, where would you start looking?
