The Deer and the Scent

ਜੋ ਨਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਉਦਿਆਨੇ ਤੇ ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂੜ ਮੁਹੇ ॥
jo nar bharam bharam udi-aanay tay saakat moorh muhay.
Those beings who wander in the wilderness of doubt - those faithless cynics are foolish, and are plundered.
ji-o marig naabh basai baas basnaa bharam bharmi-o jhaar gahay. ||3||
They are like the deer: the scent of musk comes from its own navel, but it wanders and roams around, searching for it in the bushes. ||3||

In plain words

Those who wander and wander in the wild forest of doubt, turned away from the One, are foolish, and they get robbed.

They are like the deer: the sweet musk scent comes from its own belly, yet it roams and roams, searching for it in the bushes.

We often hunt far and wide for what was inside us all along.
The deeper layer

We often search far away for something that was inside us the whole time.

The verse tells of the musk deer. A sweet smell comes from a small spot on its own body, near its belly. The verse says ji-o marig naabh basai baas: the scent lives in the deer's own navel. But the deer does not know that. It runs from bush to bush, sniffing, trying to find where the smell comes from.

The verse calls people who wander in doubt saakat, those who have turned away from the One. It says they are foolish, and they get robbed. Those are strong words, and the picture is for all of us. We all do this sometimes. We chase the next new thing to feel happy, when the peace we want is already inside us.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you searched everywhere for, only to find it was close by the whole time?
