You are Great and Unfathomable; Your Wisdom, God, is Profound and Incomprehensible. Please bless me with that wisdom, by which I might attain You, O Lord God.

The Guru has placed His Hand upon servant Nanak; he chants the Name of the Lord. ||4||4||

In plain words

You are great and beyond reach, Lord, and Your wisdom is deeper than any mind can go. Please give me the wisdom by which I can find You, Lord.

Nanak says: the Guru has placed a hand on the head of the One's servant, and I keep repeating the Naam of the One.

The vast One reaches you through something as simple as a hand on your head.
The deeper layer

The One is too deep to understand, and yet comes close in the simplest way.

The verse calls the One's wisdom agaaDh boDh, wisdom so deep you can never touch the bottom. Nanak does not try to understand it all. He asks for just enough wisdom to find his way to the One.

Then comes a very human picture: gur haath sir Dhari-o, the Guru placed a hand on my head. You may know that feeling. A grandparent rests a hand on your head, and you feel blessed, safe, and loved as their own. The huge and the gentle meet in one moment.

A Question to Sit With

When has a small, kind gesture from someone made you feel steadied?
