Listen, O mind: meditate on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਮਜਾਨੁ ॥
sun man har keerat athsath majaan.
Listen, O mind: the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises is equal to bathing at the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage.
ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧॥
sun man gurmukh paavahi maan. ||1||
Listen, O mind: as Gurmukh, you shall be blessed with honor. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Listen, O mind: remember the Naam of the One, Har, Har, and keep your attention on it.

Listen, O mind: singing the praises of the One is like bathing at the sixty-eight holy places people travel to.

Listen, O mind: turning toward the Guru, you will be honored.

The cleansing people once traveled far for happens right where you are.
The deeper layer

Listening for the Naam and singing the One's praises wash you clean right where you are.

Each line begins sun man — listen, O mind — the same deep listening that Japji calls suniai. Singing the One's praises, kirtan, is set equal to bathing at the athsath, the sixty-eight sacred pilgrimage sites: the cleansing people once traveled far for happens right where you are, through singing from the heart.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can do right where you are that others think requires a special place?
