Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O Lord, You are made known through the people who love You.
You cut the ropes that bind them, and You set them free.
You come to know the deepest things by watching people who live them, not by arguing about them.
The One is made known through the people who love the One, and the ropes that bind them fall away.
This is the rahao, the pause line, the center of the shabad. "Bhagat" (devotion) is how the One is "janaa-ee," made known — knowing that grows from love. "Kaat jayvree" (cutting the rope) pictures freedom as bonds falling away.
A Question to Sit With
Have you ever understood something important not from a book, but from watching how someone lived?
