Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 33
Verse 3 of 5

Only the one who tastes it knows

ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
jo jan raataa parabh kai rang.
Those humble beings who are imbued with God's Love
ਤਿਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
tin sukh paa-i-aa parabh kai sang.
find peace in God's Congregation.
ਜਿਸੁ ਰਸੁ ਆਇਆ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
jis ras aa-i-aa so-ee jaanai.
They alone understand this, to whom this subtle essence comes.
ਪੇਖਿ ਪੇਖਿ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੈਰਾਨੈ ॥੨॥
paykh paykh man meh hairaanai. ||2||
Beholding it, and gazing upon it, in their minds they are wonderstruck. ||2||

In plain words

Those who are dyed in the One's love, the way color soaks into cloth, find peace in the company of the One.

Only the one to whom this sweet taste comes understands it.

Seeing it, and seeing it again, their minds are filled with wonder.

Some things can only be known by tasting them yourself, not by being told about them.
The deeper layer

Only the one who tastes the One's love knows it, and that taste fills the mind with wonder.

"Raataa rang" (dyed in the color) is the recurring Gurbani image of the soul taking on the divine hue. "Jis ras aa-i-aa so-ee jaanai" — only the one to whom the essence comes knows it — says spiritual taste cannot be had secondhand. "Hairaanai" is wonderstruck, the Waheguru-state of awe.

A Question to Sit With

What is a feeling that words can never quite capture, that you would have to feel to understand?
