Erasing my demerits and faults, God has made me His Own. My Guru, the Lord of the World, protects me. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I am only a child, running to the shelter of the kind One.

The One cut away my faults and made me the One's own. My Guru, the Lord of the World, keeps me safe.

You can bring your whole imperfect self to a safe place and still be held close.
The deeper layer

You can run to the One like a small child, just as you are.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Ham baarik saran parabh da-i-aal: I am a child, in the shelter of the kind One. That simple trust is the heart of this shabad.

Avgan kaat: the One cut away my faults. The weight falls on being claimed and kept safe. Raakh lee-ay: the One protected me. Think of a small child who spills juice and runs to a parent. The parent does not start with the mess. They pick up the child first.

A Question to Sit With

Where, or with whom, do you feel most completely safe to be yourself?
