Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 36
Verse 3 of 5

Whatever comes, it is good

ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਮੀਤ ॥
janam maran gur raakhay meet.
The Guru has saved me from death and rebirth, O friend;
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
har kay naam si-o laagee pareet.
I am in love with the Name of the Lord.
ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਗਏ ਕਲੇਸ ॥
kot janam kay ga-ay kalays.
The suffering of millions of incarnations is gone;
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਭਲ ਹੋਸ ॥੨॥
jo tis bhaavai so bhal hos. ||2||
whatever pleases Him is good. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru has saved me from birth and death, my friend.

I am in love with the Naam of the One.

The suffering of millions of lifetimes is gone.

Whatever pleases the One is good.

A deep trust lets you meet whatever comes as something you can learn from.
The deeper layer

Love for the Naam lifts old suffering, and whatever pleases the One is good.

"Janam maran" is birth and death, the long round of coming and going. "Jo tis bhaavai so bhal hos" — whatever pleases the One is good — is the deep acceptance of Hukam, the flow of existence, that steadies a life. It is felt as trust.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a situation you cannot control right now? What would it feel like to trust that you can meet it?
