Now I know the way

ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਿਉ ਲਾਗੋ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥
charan kamal si-o laago pi-aar.
I am in love with the Lotus Feet of the Lord;
ਬਿਨਸੇ ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
binsay kaam kroDh ahaNkaar.
I am no longer consumed by sexual desire, anger and egotism.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲਨ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਜਾਨਾਂ ॥
parabh milan kaa maarag jaanaaN.
Now, I know the way to meet God.
ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਾਂ ॥੩॥
bhaa-ay bhagat har si-o man maanaaN. ||3||
Through loving devotional worship, my mind is pleased and appeased with the Lord. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have fallen in love with the One's lotus feet.

The grabbing wants, the anger and the puffed-up "I'm so important" feeling no longer eat me up.

Now I know the way to meet the One.

Through loving devotion, my mind is happy and at peace with the One.

The way to what you love most is often just loving, plainly and fully.
The deeper layer

The way to the One is love itself.

Charan kamal means lotus feet. It is a tender picture of being close to the One, the way a child sits close to a parent. Guru Arjan says he has fallen in love with that nearness.

As that love grows, three troublemakers fade: kaam, kroDh, ahaNkaar. That means grabbing wants, anger, and ahaNkaar, the puffed-up pride that says "I am so important."

Then he says, parabh milan kaa maarag jaanaaN: now I know the way to meet the One. And the way is bhaa-ay bhagat, loving devotion. The path and the place you arrive are made of the same thing. It is like learning to swim. You do not get to the water by some other road. You learn by being in the water.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so much that being near it makes the small annoyances disappear?
