The jewel beyond price

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਜਣ ਸੰਤ ਮੀਤ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ॥
sun sajan sant meet suhaylay.
Listen, O friends, Saints, my exalted companions.
ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਹ ਅਤੋਲੇ ॥
naam ratan har agah atolay.
The Jewel of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is unfathomable and immeasurable.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
sadaa sadaa parabh gun niDh gaa-ee-ai.
Forever and ever, sing the Glories of God, the Treasure of Virtue.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥੬॥
kaho naanak vadbhaagee paa-ee-ai. ||4||6||
Says Nanak, by great good fortune, He is found. ||4||6||

In plain words

Listen, my friends, holy people, my dear companions.

The Naam of the One is a jewel too deep to measure and too precious to weigh.

Forever and ever, let us sing the praises of the One, the treasure of every good thing.

Nanak says: by great good fortune, the One is found.

The most valuable things cannot be weighed or priced — and they are meant to be shared.
The deeper layer

The Naam is a jewel beyond price, and good news like this is for sharing with friends.

In this last verse, Guru Arjan calls his friends close to share good news.

Sun sajan sant meet suhaylay means, listen, my friends, my good companions. The news is too good to keep to himself.

Naam ratan means the jewel of the Naam. It is agah atolay: too deep to measure, too precious to weigh. Think of a grandparent's love. You cannot put it on a scale or give it a price tag.

The One is gun niDh, the treasure of every good thing. So he says, let us sing about the One forever. Kaho naanak vadbhaagee paa-ee-ai: Nanak says, it is great good fortune to find this. And good fortune like this is meant to be shared.
