Freed in humble company

ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
har rang raataa man raam gun gaavai.
Imbued with the Lord's Love, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.

mukto saaDhoo Dhooree naavai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
They are liberated, bathing in the dust of the feet of the Holy. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Colored through with the One's love, they sing the praises of the One.

They are set free, bathing in the dust of the feet of holy people.

There is a strange freedom in being willing to be the smallest, most humble learner in the room.
The deeper layer

Love sets you singing, and humility sets you free.

This is the rahaa-o, the pause line, the center of the shabad. har rang raataa man raam gun gaavai — the mind colored by the One's love sings the One's praises. Think of a white cloth dipped in dye. It takes on the color all the way through.

mukto saaDhoo Dhooree naavai — they are set free by bathing in the dust of the feet of the holy. This means being humble enough to learn from good people. When the "me first" self steps down, it is set free. This is humble learning, not feeling worthless.

A Question to Sit With

Is it hard for you to be a beginner at something? What would make it easier?
