Sikhism·Raag Prabhaatee·Raag Parbhaatee, Shabad 39
Verse 3 of 5

Fearless in the sanctuary

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਤਰੇ ਪਾਰਿ ॥
gur parsaadee utray paar.
By Guru's Grace, they are carried across to the other shore;
ਭਉ ਭਰਮੁ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
bha-o bharam binsay bikaar.
they are rid of fear, doubt and corruption.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਸੇ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨਾ ॥
man tan antar basay gur charnaa.
The Guru's Feet abide deep within their minds and bodies.
ਨਿਰਭੈ ਸਾਧ ਪਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਰਨਾ ॥੨॥
nirbhai saaDh paray har sarnaa. ||2||
The Holy are fearless; they take to the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By the Guru's kindness, they are carried across to the other shore.

Their fear, their doubt and their wrong ways are gone.

The Guru's feet live deep inside their minds and bodies.

The holy people are fearless; they rest in the shelter of the One.

Fearlessness grows from feeling deeply safe, not from pretending nothing scares you.
The deeper layer

Those who rest in the One's shelter become fearless.

gur parsaadee utray paar — by the Guru's grace, they are carried across to the other shore. bha-o bharam binsay bikaar — bha-o (fear), bharam (doubt), and bikaar (wrong ways) all melt away.

man tan antar basay gur charnaa — the Guru's feet live deep in their minds and bodies. nirbhai saaDh paray har sarnaa — the holy ones are nirbhai, fearless, safe in the One's shelter.

This word echoes nirbhau, "without fear," from the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib. Think of a small child holding a parent's hand in a big crowd. The child is not scared, because they belong. Fearlessness grows out of belonging.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you feel safe enough to be brave?
