Palms pressed together

ਦੁਇ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਕਰੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

With my palms pressed together, I offer this prayer.
ਸਦਾ ਜਪੇ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣਤਾਸੁ ॥੪॥੯॥
sadaa japay naanak guntaas. ||4||9||
O Nanak, I meditate forever on the Lord, the Treasure of Virtue. ||4||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With my palms pressed together, I offer this prayer.

Nanak says: forever I keep in mind the One, the treasure-store of every good thing.

A simple prayer with open hands can hold a whole day's hope.
The deeper layer

With palms pressed together, you offer a humble prayer and keep the One in mind forever.

The closing verse pictures du-ay kar jorh karee ardaas: with both hands joined, I offer a prayer. Ardaas is a humble prayer, and joined hands are its posture. It is humble and open, like a child asking a parent for help.

Then Guru Arjan calls the One guntaas, the treasure-house of every good quality. Every kindness and every strength is stored there. The shabad closes quietly, in prayer.

A Question to Sit With

If you pressed your hands together right now and made one honest wish, what would it be?
