A light switched on within

ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਹੋਆ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
naam japat ho-aa pargaas.
Chanting the Naam, I am enlightened.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੇ ਕੀਨਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੩॥
gur sabday keenaa ridai nivaas. ||3||
The Word of the Guru's Shabad has come to dwell within my heart. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Chanting the Naam, a light has switched on inside me.

The Guru's Word has come to live in my heart.

The right practice can switch on a light inside you that stays lit.
The deeper layer

Remembering the Naam turns on a light inside that stays on.

Naam japat ho-aa pargaas means "remembering the Naam, light came." The Naam is the presence of the One, kept in mind. Pargaas means light, being able to see clearly.

Gur sabday keenaa ridai nivaas means "the Guru's Word has made its home in my heart." Ridai means heart. Nivaas means a home.

Think of the difference between a camera flash and a lamp in your bedroom. The flash is bright for a second, then it's gone. The lamp stays on, so you can read and play and find things. The Word is that kind of light. It doesn't flash. It stays.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that helps you see clearly when you are confused?
