Powerful and always kind

ਗੁਰ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ ॥

The Guru is All-powerful and Merciful forever.
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
har jap jap naanak bha-ay nihaal. ||4||11||
Chanting and meditating on the Lord, Nanak is exalted and enraptured. ||4||11||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Guru is strong enough for anything, and kind forever.

Nanak says: remembering the One again and again, I am filled with joy.

True strength and true gentleness belong together, not apart.
The deeper layer

The Guru is both all-powerful and always kind.

Gur samrath sadaa da-i-aal means "the Guru is all-capable and forever merciful." Samrath means able to do anything. Da-i-aal means kind and caring.

Power and gentleness belong together here. Think of a big, strong firefighter carrying a scared kitten down a ladder, very carefully. That is the whole picture of the One: strong enough for anything and gentle with everyone.

Har jap jap naanak bha-ay nihaal means "remembering the Lord again and again, Nanak became full of joy." Nihaal means glad and blessed. The song ends in the same gladness it began with.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you know who is both strong and kind? What makes that combination special?
