Verse 2 of 3

The Giver of clear seeing

ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਦਾਰ ਦੈਨਹਾਰ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥੧॥
paraan aDhaar dukh bidaar dainhaar buDh bibayk. ||1||
He is the Support of the breath of life, the Destroyer of pain, the Giver of discriminating understanding. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is the support of my every breath, and the One breaks pain apart.

The One gives me clear understanding: the sense to tell what is true from what is false.

One of the best gifts is clear seeing — the sense to tell what matters most.
The deeper layer

The One holds up our breath and gives us clear seeing.

The verse gives three names. paraan aDhaar: support of the breath of life. dukh bidaar: the one who breaks pain apart. dainhaar buDh bibayk: the Giver of clear understanding.

Bibayk means telling what is real from what is not, truth from falseness. It is like a good filter on a water bottle. It lets the clean water through and keeps the dirt out. That is clear seeing: knowing what matters from what does not.

A Question to Sit With

How do you tell the difference between something that just seems important and something that matters most?
